FRANKLIN TWP.— Kevin Antczak turned his head as he reached the track at Delsea and went into a full sprint.
As he rounded the final turn, the Mainland runner hoisted his hands in the air and let out an exuberant celebration at the finish line.
Antczak’s run of 16:00.24 won the Boys Division 2 title at the SJTCA Open.
The time was also the fastest of the day, which earned Antczak the Jim Camburn Award for best individual boys time.
“I had so much energy left in me,” Antczak said. “I was so excited. On Tuesday, we had a race and it was a similar scenario. The person was right there and I knew I could do it. So I just believed in myself.”
Antczak’s Mainland teammates ensured the whole team went home with hardware, as they earned the Don Danser Award for low team average time at 16:31.88.
“I’m really proud of my team,” Antczak said. “It was very important because we got upset by a few points at sectionals so we wanted to prove that we deserve to be here without Delsea being in our group anymore.”
The Mustangs placed five runners in the top 12 of the Division 2 race to win the team title.
Mainland’s girls achieved success at Delsea as well, as Alyssa Turner won the Girls Division 2 race in 19:52.51.
The Mustangs took second to Paul VI in the Division 2 team race.
“We can’t really get our confidence too high, but I think that just having a good start to our season is just boosting our confidence,” Turner said.
Cherry Hill East won the Don Danser Award for best girls average time at 20:37.75.
Cherry Hill East’s Oliver Adler won the boys Division 3 race, while Bishop Eustace’s Connor Melko captured the Boys Division 1 title.
Eustace’s Katy Storti won the Girls Division 1 crown and Shawnee’s Bella Turner captured the Girls Division 3 title and the Jim Camburn Award for best overall girls time.
