It was an historic day for the Haddonfield High School girls lacrosse team.
The Bulldawgs won the program’s first-ever state championship with a Group 2 win Saturday in a game played at Kean University.
Competing at the same location, Moorestown – South Jersey’s most successful program -- won its first Group 3 state title since 2015, and pulled down the No. 1 seed in the Tournament of Champions.
Meanwhile, Clearview gave a gallant effort in seeking its first-ever Group 4 title, but bowed to powerful Ridgewood, the No. 1 team in the state.
Haddonfield 18, Sparta 11: Jaimie McCormick, McKenzie Blake and Gabbi Connor scored four goals each as the Bulldawgs rolled to a dominating win.
In their second straight appearance in the state title game, the Bulldawgs raced off to an 11-5 halftime. A Blake goal touched off a 4-0 run in the second half as Haddonfield pulled away.
Ashley Campo and Emily Smart added two goals each to the Haddonfield attack.
Moorestown 7, Summit 6: The Quakers broke a run of five straight state titles for Summit three in Group 2 and the last two in Group 3.
It was the third time in a row the teams met for the Group 3 title and it was the first one the Quakers were able to win.
Robin Panzerella led the way with two goals and two assists.
It was Panzerella’s goal with just under eight minutes left that broke a 6-6 tie and provided the winning margin.
Kyla Frank added three goals and Kelsey Knobloch scored one goal with one assist.
Ridgewood 12, Clearview 9: Freshman Hailey Russo completed an outstanding season with five goals, but it was not enough to save the Pioneers.
Despite facing overwhelming odds, Cleaview was still within 10-7 in the second half, only to see Nicole Macolino score two goals within two minutes to help Ridgewood hold on for the win.
