PENNSVILLE — In the South Jersey Group 1 softball final, Gloucester City High School took home the title by shutting out Pennsville 6-0.
Gloucester City's offense sparked early, plating a run in the top of the first inning. Nikki Velez singled and was driven home by Amanda Boulden. In the third inning the Lions' bats heated up again as Amber Gundle singled, Maddie Chain walked and Boulden came through with a single to left, scoring both runners.
In the fifth, Gundle started it with a lead-off single. Boulden added another RBI with a single to score Gundle.
Bouldin finished the game going 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs. Gloucester added 2 more runs in the sixth to seal the victory.
Chain had an outstanding pitching performance. She allowed just six hits and struck out three. She was backed by stellar defense from the Lions.
Said Chain: "I am the only pitcher, there is not much we can do, I pitch every game. I could still throw two more. We changed our plan from last game (against Pennsville earlier this season). We pitched inside last game and we wanted to pitch outside (Friday). I know I can depend on my defense."
Chain and the Lions will take on Central Jersey champion New Egypt on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Rancocas Valley in the state Group 1 semifinals. New Egypt, the top seed in the Central Jersey section, won its sectional crown by topping Metuchen 4-2 Friday.
