Shawnee places second at 29th annual early-season event

Hammonton takes third by dropping Quakers

In the first round of the 29th Annual Moorestown Classic on Saturday, Moorestown defeated Pitman, 4-1.

In singles Moorestown Tyler Blessing d. Zach Castagna, 6-4, 6-1. David Shirley collected Pitman's lone victory with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Marc Mounzer. The Quakers' David Blatcher turned away Giovanni Rizzo, 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles, the Moorestown tandem of Alex Epstein and Jon Lewis toppled Andrew Sawyer and Nick Knierim, 4-6, 7-6 (6-4), 12-10, and Moorestown's Wes Bobadilla/John Matthews earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Pitman's R. Amwake and A. Underwood.

In the semifinals Moorestown lost to Montgomery, 5-0. It was the Quakers (4-1) first loss of the season as they headed into action Sunday.

On Sunday, Moorestown suffered its second defeat of the season, dropping a 3-2 decision to Hammonton, allowing the Blue Devils to earn third place in the Moorestown Classic.

It was the Hammonton doubles teams of Steve Salvatore and Marcus Mitchell at first doubles, and Evan Barnett and Jordan Mitchell at second doubles, who were able earn straight-set victories to assist in the third-place finish.

The only Hammonton singles player to taste victory in Sunday's third place match was Michael Seligman, who took down Mounzer in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. 

Montgomery defeated Shawnee, 4-1, in the tournament's first-place match. The only player emerging with a win for Shawnee in Sunday's final was Justin Kang, who turned aside Montgomery's No. 1 player, Chris D'Agostino, 6-4, 6-2.

En route to the final, Shawnee defeated St. Augustine, 5-0, and Hammonton 4-1. 

Moorestown Friends also participated, losing once, 4-1 to eventual third-place finisher Hammonton, and later stopping St. Augustine, 3-2.
