VOORHEES --- Winslow senior Adriyana Jennings relishes the challenge of going head-to-head with opponents on the blocks.
Jennings, the Eagles’ leading scorer, welcomes the task because of her aggressive nature of play.
“I’m an aggressive player so I like being down low,” Jennings said. “If I have to be at the top, I’ll be at the top, but I like the blocks better.
“It’s pretty easy to work down there depending on my positioning. Once I get my position set, it is on from there.”
Not only is she one of the keys to Winslow’s on-court success, she has developed into a leader that head coach Jason Handy relies on.
“Her leadership on the floor is impeccable and she’s definitely an extension of the coaching staff at this point,” Handy said. “She does everything we need her to do.”
That was on display when Jennings scored four points in a row to fend off a run from Haddon Township and pull off a win over the perennial South Jersey Group 1 contender.
“Adriyana felt she had to do more,” Handy said. “I told her she could, but it has to be under control and within the offense. Her getting those four points was exactly what we needed at the time.”
The win over Haddon Township was one of many games the Eagles are using in preparation for their South Jersey Group 3 opener against Delsea.
‘“Our motto right now is every game is your last game,” Handy said. “We’re in playoff mode at this point. We’re playing every game as if its a playoff game.”
“Honestly, using that game right there is big because Delsea is going to be the same way. Having the ability to play a team like Haddon Township, who is very well coached by Tommy Mulligan, definitely helps us moving forward.”
As the extension of the coaching staff, Jennings knows exactly what Winslow needs to work on before embarking on the playoff journey.
“Every game from here on out is a playoff game,” Jennings said. “If you want to win, play like you want to win. If you don’t feel like you wanna win, it’ll end up as a loss.
“Teamwork and keeping our head up and finding the open person. That’s what we need to work on. We’re not for self, but I feel as though if we move the ball around more than we dribble, we’ll be more successful with scoring points as a unit.
“We know we have to play the first round of playoffs. Every game now we play them like we’re going to play in the first round of the playoffs."
