HARRISON TWP. -- The Shawnee girls lacrosse team knew it was going to be hard to beat a rival for the third time.
Clearview proved to be a tough foe in the South Jersey Group 4 quarterfinals, but the Renegades outlasted the Pioneers 9-8 on Friday.
Julie Cassidy and Sami MacDonald both recorded hat tricks, while Jamie Carvin contributed a pair of goals in the victory.
“We have a lot of talented people on our team and we utilize them during transition and that really helps us out,” Cassidy said.
Shawnee used a scoring stretch at the start of the second half to open up a five-goal lead on the home side.
Cassidy and her fellow attackers made an adjustment to Clearview’s defense that paid off at the start of the second stanza.
“It was hard for us to hit the middle because they were open but always got a stick on it.” Cassidy said. “We tried to stop hitting the middle so much and utilize the outside. I think it really helped us.”
“It’s very difficult (to beat a team three times),” Cassidy said. “We came into this game knowing it would be all grit and heart. We didn’t have a lot of heart in the first half. They outhustled us. We fixed that in the second half and came out on top.”
The Renegades were forced to dig deep in the final few minutes, as the Pioneers made a run to cut the deficit to one goal.
But senior leadership and some impressive defensive play helped the Renegades pull off the victory and set up a semifinal clash with Lenape.
“We definitely have leaders all over the field,” Cassidy said. “Our defense stepped up on the last play when we got the ball back. That was huge for us. We have a lot of seniors and we wanted to play for them and move on and hopefully win Group 4.”
