Collingswood fended off Delsea to win its second straight SJ Small 4x400 race at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA-- Simply unbelievable.

That was the way Collingswood’s 4x400 relay team described winning back-to-back South Jersey Small School races at the Penn Relays.

Anchor Samantha Hamrick held off a late charge from Delsea to pick up a second win at Penn for three of the four relay team members.

“It’s unbelievable,” Hamrick said. “We had faith in ourselves that we could do it. We just had to prove it to ourselves that we could actually do it.”

Collingswood was out in front for the majority of the race, but Delsea closed the gap as the race went on.

Even though the race came down to a one second difference between Collingswood and Delsea, Hamrick didn’t pay much attention to the surge coming from second place.

“Just keep on saying to myself that I have to keep going and I have to keep us in the lead," Hamrick said. I can’t let her pass me, even if they are a stronger leg than me, I just have to keep pushing.

“But I was thinking of how close she was. I had to keep pushing through it.”

Rancocas Valley won the South Jersey Large School 4x400 and qualified for the Philadelphia Area final on Saturday.

RV’s 4x100 team also qualified for the Northeast and Tri-State finals to be held on Friday and Saturday.

Millville also qualified for the pair of 4x100 finals alongside RV. They are two of three New Jersey teams competing in the races along with Union Catholic.

Winslow and Paul VI earned spots in the Philadelphia Area 4x400 final along with RV.

Haddonfield ran a tremendous 9:20.33 in the 4x800 heats and earned itself a position in the Championship of America race to be held Friday afternoon.

Timber Creek’s Tierra Hooker had the best field finish of any South Jersey athlete on Thursday by taking third in the high jump at 5 feet, 8.75 inches.

Haddon Heights’ Cydney Thomas placed sixth in the shot put, Millville’s Leah Ellis took 11th in the long jump, Atlantic City’s Claudine Smith placed eighth in the triple jump.
