Sam Hoban's 3-run double in the 7th handed the Pirates a victory over their BCSL rival.

MAPLE SHADE-- Sam Hoban has been encouraged to be patient at the plate and put the ball in play.

The advice has helped Hoban make contact with the ball, and it paid off in a major way in Cinnaminson’s 7-5 win over Maple Shade on Wednesday.

With the game tied in the seventh inning, Hoban delivered a three-run double to right-center to put the Pirates in the lead for good.

“That’s huge and it’s great to see,” Cinnaminson head coach Brooke Fisher said. “She struggled a bit the first couple games and she keeps putting the ball in play. I told her to be patient and good things happen when you put the ball in play and she continues to put the ball in play. It’s great to see her stay at it and pound the zone and get some success out of it.”

Hoban’s two-out hit came after Payton MacNair, Candace Delio and Hannah Shearer reached base.

“I just walked up there like there was no pressure,” Hoban said. “I just tried my best to get the runners in.”

In the previous inning, pitcher Riece Onorato fended off Maple Shade’s rally by forcing a two-out flyout.

In the fifth, Onorato stranded three Wildcats on base by forcing a pop out.

“We pulled it together pretty well,” Hoban said. “We kept going and stuck together through the bases loaded to get the outs.”

“She’s doing really well for us,” Fisher said. “Honestly, she is the thing that keeps us in the games. We’ve very confident with her out there. We feel like when she’s out there, we can win any game.”

Onorato was also a force at the plate, as she went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

The top four batters in the Cinnaminson order reached base on 10 occasions and drove in the first four runs.

“I think the bottom of the lineup really looks up to them and they feel confident when they get on base,” Fisher said. “There’s a little less pressure on them to pick it up.”

Wednesday’s win also inspired confidence within the team after the Pirates fell flat against Moorestown on Tuesday.

“This is actually a really big win because we picked ourselves up from our loss yesterday,” Onorato said. “We bounced back and we’re back to playing how we want to play.”
