Dylan Broomell's two-run double and Jackson Vanesko's three strong relief innings lead Hermits to victory.

RICHLAND -- One swing of the bat from Dylan Broomell and one set of strikeouts from Jackson Vanesko allowed St. Augustine to knock off Millville in Cape-Atlantic League American Division play on Tuesday.

“That stretch right there was huge,” Broomell said. “That put us on top and gave us the lead. We never looked back from there.”

The Hermits won 6-2 behind Broomell’s two-run double in the fourth inning and three impressive innings out of the bullpen from Vanesko.

After Jayson Hoopes and Jack Peacock reached base to start the fourth, Broomell drove a deep fly ball to center that knocked in a pair of runs.

“I saw one curveball and two straight fastballs,” Broomell said. “I just jumped on the second one and roped it.”

“Dylan’s hit was probably the play of the game,” Vanesko said. “I have a lot of confidence in everybody on our team. It’s great to see everybody pulling through for a great win.”

Vanesko slammed the door on the Thunderbolts in his next inning on the mound by stranding runners on second and third with three straight strikeouts.

“It was great, I wasn’t even really thinking about it,” Vanesko said. “I was just hyped to get the sticks going again. It was a big confidence boost for me, especially going out again the next inning.”

In total, Vanesko gave up just one run in three innings in relief of Mason Carmolingo.

Millville stayed in the game behind 10 strikeouts from Dom Buonadonna, but the Thunderbolts left too many men on base.

The Hermits took advantage of their opportunities with runners in scoring position.

Cole Vanderslice and Kenny Levari had RBI hits in the third before Broomell broke the game open in the fifth.

The other runs were scored by Vanderslice in the first on an error after a triple and Levari on a steal play in the sixth.

The victory kept the Hermits well in front of their divisional competition, and it handed them plenty of confidence ahead of a weekend tournament that starts with a game against Malvern Prep.

“This game means a lot,” Broomell said. “We’re just going to keep riding this wave into Saturday and hopefully take a few more wins.”
