The Minutemaids came back from a 7-2 deficit to win in eight innings.

MEDFORD--- It went from sunny to whipping wind to wind and rain to sun again and then back to rain.

The weather changes during Washington Township’s 13-10 win over Lenape on Friday exemplified the up-and-down nature of the game itself.

The Minutemaids came back from five runs down to tie the game, and then the lead changed hands a few times before they took control in the eighth inning.

“It was really crazy, especially with the rain too,” Township pitcher Juliana Zorn said. “It was really fun coming together and picking each other up in this game, especially with how hard the rain was.”

“It’s not always good to be down runs wise, but it’s fun when we come back,” Township’s Daisy Marrero said.

Marrero came up with a few clutch hits for the Minutemaids. In the sixth inning, she handed Washington Township its first lead with a RBI single and she followed that up in the eighth with one of three run-scoring hits.

“I just try and clear my head and not focus too much on the runners and just driving them in,” Marrero said.

Marrero, Carly Quint and Juliana Zorn all contributed RBI singles in the four-run eighth to finally create some separation from the Indians.

Zorn also played a major role in the circle, as she came in relief of Alayna Kunicki in the second inning.

After Lenape put seven across the plate in the first two innings, Zorn limited the Indians to three runs.

“Just have to clear my head, hit my spots and make the outs and then get back in and score a lot of runs,” Zorn said.

Jess Chen was the catalyst of Lenape’s early success with a two-run home run and an RBI single.

Lenape answered Township with two runs in the sixth, but once the game went into extra innings, the Minutemaids took control.

In addition to the victory being a boost in the Olympic American, it also ended a two-game losing skid for Township ahead of a weekend tournament.

“We just came off a two-game losing streak,” Marrero said. “It feels really good. We’re going into the Deptford tournament tomorrow so we’re going for a win there.”
