COLUMBUS-- Winning has become a habit for the Winslow girls track team on the highest stages/
Winslow took home its fifth consecutive Group 3 team title on Saturday at Northern Burlington High School.
Some members of the squad like sprint specialist Shakira Dancy have only been around for a few of the championships, but they’re still in awe of what’s been accomplished.
“I’ve only been here for two, but it feels great to win five times in a row,” Dancy said. “It feels awesome and I can’t wait to do it again.”
Dancy was a major part of Winslow’s success over the two-day meet. She captured the 100-meter title in 11.80 seconds, the 200-meter gold in 24.00 seconds and helped the 4x100 relay team win in 3:53.28.
“The weather was nice. Everything is in my favor and I just have to put it all on the track,” Dancy said.
But Dancy wasn’t the only star who shined bright for Winslow. Tionna Tobias captured gold in the high jump at five feet, four inches and the long jump at 19 feet, three inches.
“No matter how many mistakes we make or downfalls we go through, we can always get better and drive forward and be our greatest,” Dancy said. “To continue to be successful it feels awesome.”
Flora Ahiarakwe and Janeya Hammond also contributed points with fifth-place finishes in the 100 and 200, respectively.
“Freshman Janeya Hammond, she’s already running college times and the other junior Flora Ahiarakwe, she’s improved the most to me because when I first got here, she was doing okay, but throughout the two years she's improved in her events and I can’t wait to see her improve a lot more,” Dancy said.
What helps breed the success at Winslow is the level of competition not only around them at the meets, but within the team as well .
“The energy here is outrageous,” Dancy said. “I don’t even know how to describe it because everyone is so great and it just pushes you even more to be up there.”
With another trophy in hand, all eyes are on the Meet of Champions where Winslow could record some high placings as well to cap an incredibly successful season.
